Colombian authorities confirmed Tuesday that they have reopened an investigation into whether an Alabama-based coal company financed a paramilitary group during the South American nation's bloody civil conflict.
Drummond's operations include two open-pit mines in the Cesar Basin, Puerto Drummond, a deep-water ocean port near Santa Marta and coal transportation and handling facilities. In 2017, Drummond's Colombian thermal coal production stood at 32.4 million mt, around 36% of the total annual production for 2017 out of Colombia.
Drummond began feasibility studies for the mining and transportation of coal in Colombia in 1986. Part of the transportation system is an ocean port capable of receiving coal via railroad, storage and blending capability and ship loading. The initial site selected was in the Municipality of Santa Marta near the then existing PRODECO port.
